Dear Parishioners,
There are many ways to approach the season of Lent. The main goal, though, is to be more united with Christ who is willing to sacrifice himself and conquer sin and death for us.
In my almost 46 years as a Catholic I’ve heard various beautiful invitations for this 40 day long spiritual adventure, and I’d like to share with you some of my favorite ones.
If we want to be more holy, we need to say NO to even the smallest things that aren’t coming from God and are coming from the Evil One. If we aim for life in God, the devil will come to do his best to discourage us and to lead us away from God. We must be firm and patient, and ready to stand up whenever we fall.
Without any further remarks, I’m leaving you with a few things to consider for your Lent.
- Create a time to be quiet in prayer every day (ideally early in the morning when your mind is rested).
- Think of your strengths and pick one of them and find a way to use it every day to bless others.
- Read a spiritual book throughout the season and be reflective (learn about God and our faith).
- Take time to write a spiritual journal every single day (focus on gratitude and love). - Clean your life from distractions (your heart, your mind, your home, your iPhone) and get rid of all that takes you away from God’s love and grace.
- Make more room for God. Choose to love yourself more and to be more disciplined (time when you wake up, you go to bed, you pray, you eat, you exercise, you spend quality time with your loved ones).
- Reach out to others: let them feel that you care & remember (call them, visit them, help financially).
There are of course multiple options to change our lives during Lent. We need God’s grace and guidance. There are many Catholic traditions that we can embrace and adapt in the next 40 days. Lent – though we walk together as The Church - is a very personal journey because everyone has a little different history.
Let’s make time to be vigilant and choose to make changes in our routines so we may become more like Jesus Christ. Let’s pray that this Lent may renew our Notre Dame community and make us fruitful witnesses of Our Father’s Kingdom.
I appreciate all your prayers for me,
Fr. Rafael Duda
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on
Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek
the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms;
and we practice self-control through fasting.
By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert.

This program benefits those in our community served by the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. Lent provides an opportunity for each of us to give generously – to show gratitude for God’s gift to us and to share those gifts with others.
